The oldest child and son of the head of the country's Guardia di Finanza, a branch of the army with financial, economic, judiciary and public safety responsibilities, it was assumed that he would follow his father into public service. He had a relatively event free childhood and as a teen was closest with his baby sister and youngest sibling Cesa often shielding her from their brothers when the inevitable sibling squabbles occurred. With his intended future in mind he earned his first university degree in Economics at the University of Salerno. After earning an MBA concentrating in International Banking and Finance through the Swiss School of Management in Rome he went on to earn a Law degree from the University of Rome. During his MBA program he completed several apprenticeships including one in the bank fraud division of his father's organization. It was during this time that he stumbled upon some information regarding his grandmother's family and their mafia ties. Furious with his parents at their keeping this part of his family history from him he left home and concentrated on completing his law degree. His estrangement from his parents continued upon his receiving his degree and he returned to the small town of his birth. As a child of privilege he hadn't realized how life was for some of the poorer residents of the small villages in the southern part of the country. He began to quietly investigate the local power structure even using his father's name and position, approaching the local officers of his father's organization, to gain access to information which might not have been available to him otherwise. One of the things that he found was that, in a group of the small villages in the region, far from them being under the control of a seasoned powerful leader, a power struggle between two young men who were little more than gang leaders was in progress. Quite literally the success of his father's efforts to defeat the stronger original organization in the area had left a power vacuum and had presented him with an opportunity. Befriending some of the young men in an effort to see what he might be able to do to improve their lot in life he began to entice them with an alternative that would give them more control over their own destiny. A natural leader he soon had a loyal following. Still he eventually realized that he would have to approach one of the recognized leaders in order to make a difference. Idealist that he remained he proposed a program of schooling and assistance to help the young men he had gathered to him make their region a better place for it's people. Rebuffed by that boss he angrily shoved him and he struck his head and died. What happened next stunned Bene. He was immediately attacked by the man's bodyguard who managed to shoot him in the leg and shoulder. What neither of them knew was that the man's rival for control of the area had been shadowing Bene for weeks and took the death of his rival as the opportunity that it was. While Bene tried to defend himself with only a knife the forces of the rival gang gunned down his attackers. Bene's audacity in not only confronting the first man but defending himself without a gun earned him the gruding respect of the man who ended up on top. He saw that Bene was taken care of and offered him a position in his organization. Realizing that he was now unable to return to his former life by virtue of having killed someone Bene reluctantly accepted. While things were still unsettled he displayed an uncanny knack for negotiating peace and forging unity especially in bringing some of the remaing members of the dead man's organization into the now dominant organization. In addition, drawing on his academic background Bene was eventually able to advise the new Don on banking and financial matters allowing the family to more effectively protect their monetary assets. Bene remained in southern Italy for several more years assisting his benefactor with his financial dealings. Finally though his past caught up with him and he was indicted for the death of the mob boss he had accidentally killed years earlier. Assisted in slipping by the officers who had come to arrest him by he left Italy and having obtained further information about the location of his maternal relatives make his way to Chicago. Using some connections he'd been provided by his benefactor's organization he managed to get a law clerk position and eventually passed the Illinois bar. Once that was done he set up a financial litigation office and bidded his time. Over the next few years Bene carefully leaked information about his own history in Italy and eventually provided information regarding several small businesses that were looking for funding and had been unable to get it through legal means to the Morelli family. With this basis he was eventually able to display his charm and negotiating skills when he assisted the family's lawyer in the resolution of a money laundering matter. That he was Italian born was of course not unnoticed. The Don was now intrigued enough to investigate further eventually finding out about their relationship, including Bene's disgust with his parents about being kept in the dark regarding his grandmother's familial history. The Don eventually asked him to obtain information on several additional potential money laundering opportunities and Bene was able to come up with this information also. He was subsequently asked by the Don to be his Consigliere when the holder of the position suffered a fatal heart attack.
